Trainer Richard Dutrow, Jr, acknowledges to “taking a shot” with Diamond Stripes in the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic when an easier spot existed in the $1 million Dirt Mile. The Classic is the richest of the 11 Breeders’ Cup races spread over Friday and Saturday at Monmouth Park. “Chances like this don’t come along every day,” said Dutrow, who won the 2005 Classic with Saint Liam.

Los Angeles Kings defenseman Jaroslav Modry, left, of the Czech Republic, is checked into the glass by Dallas Stars center Joel Lundqvist of Sweden during the third period of their NHL Hockey game, Thursday, Oct. 25, 2007, in Los Angeles. The Kings won 2-1.

Alexander Frolov was one of the players the Los Angeles Kings were depending on to turn their fortunes around this season. When he faltered coming out of the gate, so did they. On Thursday night, Frolov scored in his third consecutive game following a season-opening eight-game drought. His go-ahead goal, along with Jason LaBarbera’s 29 saves, helped the Kings beat Dallas 2-1 and snap a nine-game…

Nashville Predators goalie Dan Ellis (39) kicks away a shot by the Atlanta Thrashers in the second period of an NHL hockey game in Nashville, Tenn., Thursday, Oct. 25, 2007. Ellis shut out the Thrashers 3-0. Behind Ellis are Predators defenseman Kevin Klein (8), Thrashers left wing Brett Sterling (21), and Predators defenseman Greg Zanon (5).

Dan Ellis went more than three years between NHL starts. He probably won’t have to wait nearly as long for his next one. Ellis stopped 20 shots for his first career shutout, helping the Nashville Predators snap a six-game losing streak and beat the Atlanta Thrashers 3-0 Thursday night. Jordin Tootoo and Jerred Smithson scored for Nashville, which was one loss from tying a franchise record.

Toronto Maple Leafs Pavel Kubina, left, of the Czech Republic, tangles in the corner with Pittsburgh Penguins Colby Armstrong in the second period of the Maple Leafs 5-2 win in the hockey game in Pittsburgh, Thursday, Oct. 25, 2007.

During a confusing-to-date season in which neither the Maple Leafs nor the Penguins know what they will get from night to night, Jiri Tlusty gave Toronto far more than possibly could be expected in his first NHL game. Tlusty, called up the day before, scored two goals 35 seconds apart during a four-goal flurry in the third period and the Maple Leafs shook off an early season slump for a 5-2…

Boston Bruins' Tim Thomas, right, stops a shot by Chicago Blackhawks' Robert Lang, of the Czech Republic, in the second period of an NHL hockey game, Thursday, Oct. 25, 2007, in Boston. Boston won 3-1.

With little attention being paid to the home team, Boston still came away with the victory. Phil Kessel scored two goals to lead the Bruins to a 3-1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday night. While the Red Sox took on the Colorado Rockies at Fenway Park in Game 2 of the World Series and second-ranked Boston College played at Virginia Tech, the 17,565-seat Garden was less than…
