Jockey Kieren Fallon came second in a race he should have won by a large margin, a court is told.
Jarome Iginla has been carrying the Calgary Flames lately. Iginla scored the go-ahead goal and added two assists to lead the Flames to a 4-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday night. He and Daymond Langkow hooked up at 9:21 of the second period to break open a 1-1 tie. Langkow carried the puck around the Oilers net and slickly backhanded a perfect pass onto the stick of Iginla in the slot,…
Jeremy Roenick’s bad right knee refuses to cooperate some days. Then there are other days he feels good enough to play on two lines. Roenick scored a power-play goal early in the second period and the San Jose Sharks finally won at home, beating the Nashville Predators 3-0 on Saturday night. “I feel really strong,” said Roenick, who took the last couple of days off and was questionable.
Detroit coach Mike Babcock would love Kirk Maltby to score more. Maltby had a pair of second-period goals and Henrik Zetterberg added a goal and an assist as the Red Wings rallied to beat the Phoenix Coyotes 5-2 on Saturday night. “Kirk Maltby can really shoot but he chooses not to most of the time,” Babcock said.
Although his team’s power play had generated only one goal in 22 chances coming into Saturday’s game in St. Louis, Minnesota Wild center Eric Belanger felt the unit was on the right track. “I know our power play was moving the puck well,” Belanger said. “It was just a matter of time before we scored.” The Wild scored twice with the man advantage Saturday night and that was the difference.
Simon Gagne is thoroughly enjoying the Philadelphia Flyers’ longest winning streak in nearly two years. Gagne scored his second goal of the game 48 seconds into overtime and the Philadelphia Flyers won their fifth straight game, 3-2 over the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night. “It’s always fun when you get the winning goal,” said Gagne.
Denis Savard would have thrived playing with the group he’s coaching now. Savard, whose offensive flair earned him a place in the Hockey Hall of Fame, finally has the attacking talent to build a winner in Chicago. “That’s where we’re heading,” he said after the Blackhawks’ 6-4 comeback victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night.
The New York Islanders needed nearly every second to beat the road-weary New Jersey Devils, who didn’t even have Martin Brodeur in net. Bill Guerin knocked a loose puck past backup Kevin Weekes for a power-play tally with 3.7 seconds left on the overtime clock Saturday night, giving the Islanders a 4-3 victory after they squandered a two-goal lead in the third period.
Sidney Crosby was booed whenever he touched the puck against the Washington Capitals. A loud group of Pittsburgh Penguins supporters in a sellout crowd of 18,277 responded in kind, jeering Alex Ovechkin when the puck was on his stick. Players and coaches from both sides can talk all they want about how Pittsburgh vs.
