Swept out of playoffs, Phils look aheadSwept out of playoffs, Phils look ahead

The Philadelphia Phillies put so much into just making the playoffs, they couldn’t do anything once they got there. The Colorado Rockies spoiled Philly’s postseason party with a three-game sweep, leaving players to ponder their failures over a long winter. “Having this feeling we’re having right now, hopefully that can be a little bit of a motivating factor for next year,” slugger Ryan Howard said.

Piniella’s good first season ends badlyPiniella’s good first season ends badly

For most of their first season under manager Lou Piniella, the Chicago Cubs reveled in the home atmosphere of Wrigley Field, where fans came in record numbers to join the party. The fun run ended Saturday night. Instead, the old neighborhood ballpark was filled with loud boos, especially for Aramis Ramirez and Alfonso Soriano, as the Cubs were swept out of the first round of the NL playoffs by the…

The Diamondbacks beat the Cubs 5-1 to win the best-of-five series 3-0.

Short on stars but brimming with young talent, the Arizona Diamondbacks pulled off a sweet playoff sweep and celebrated like October regulars. For the anguished Chicago Cubs, it’s another cry of `Wait Til Next Year.’ Chris Young homered on the game’s first pitch, Livan Hernandez wriggled out of several serious jams and Arizona beat the Cubs 5-1 Saturday night to complete a three-game sweep of…

Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Hal Gill (25) tries to move Montreal Canadiens' Bryan Smolinski from in front of the net during third-period NHL action in Toronto, Canada, Saturday, Oct. 6, 2007.

Even a come-from-behind win over their biggest rivals will probably not be enough to silence the Toronto Maple Leafs’ critics for long. But it was certainly a welcome development for a team that believes it has been better than the early season results have shown. “Finally,” Leafs forward Alexei Ponikarovsky said Saturday night after a 4-3 overtime win over the Montreal Canadiens.

New York Islanders' Radek Martinek, right, of the Czech Republic, checks Buffalo Sabres' Brian Campbell during the third period of an NHL hockey game Saturday, Oct. 6, 2007, at Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, N.Y.

If the New York Islanders had Mike Comrie last spring, they might have put quite a scare into the Presidents’ Trophy-winning Buffalo Sabres. Comrie made the most of his first two games with the Islanders, scoring two goals for the second straight night and lifting New York to a 3-2 victory Saturday that completed a sweep of the season-opening, home-and-home series against Buffalo.

For 59 minutes and 59 seconds, Jacksonville dealt Kansas City a humiliating shutout. As the final second ticked off the clock, the shutout vanished, but the humiliation is going to stick around a while. Controlling the line of scrimmage and stopping everybody wearing a Kansas City uniform except tight end Tony Gonzalez, the Jaguars held the Chiefs to a shocking 10 yards rushing Sunday en route to a…

Sloppy Titans get by Falcons 20-13Sloppy Titans get by Falcons 20-13

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Byron Leftwich (4) is helped up by guard Justin Blalock (63) after Leftwich was sacked on the Tennessee Titans' 12-yard-line to end the Falcons' final drive of the game late in the fourth quarter of an NFL football game in Nashville, Tenn., Sunday, Oct. 7, 2007. The Titans defeated the Falcons 20-13.

The Atlanta Falcons had first-and-goal at the Tennessee 1, needing a touchdown to get even with 2 minutes left. When Albert Haynesworth leaped and turned a toss play into an 8-yard loss, Tennessee’s resilient, stingy defense bailed out sloppy Titans quarterback Vince Young. Vincent Fuller picked off a pass and returned it 76 yards for a touchdown, and Kyle Vanden Bosch sacked Byron Leftwich with…
