Champion thoroughbred John Henry is recovering well after battling dehydration last week, officials at the Kentucky Horse Park said Monday. The 32-year-old gelding, who won Horse of the Year honors in 1981 and 1984, was treated with intravenous fluids last week when kidney problems prevented him from staying hydrated said Cathy Roby, barn manager at the Park’s Hall of Champions.

Shakespeare won the $1 million Woodbine Mile on Sunday, kicking to beat Kip Deville by a length in the turf race. Shakespeare, ridden by Garrett Gomez, finished in 1:33:58 and paid $5.90, $4.30 and $3.40. The 6-year-old won his second straight start after missing 21 months because of a tendon injury. Kip Deville returned $6.20 and $5, and Galantas paid $7.80 to show.

Olli Jokinen scored two third-period goals to lead the Florida Panthers to a 3-2 preseason victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday. The game was scheduled for a midday start to draw Broward County students to the game with reduced ticket prices, but tests kept many public students away. Anthony Stewart had the other goal for Florida, while defenseman Cory Murphy had three assists.
