Blue Jays center fielder Vernon Wells will have season-ending surgery Tuesday for a cyst and torn labrum in his left shoulder. Dr. James Andrews will operate in Birmingham, Ala. Toronto expects Wells to be ready for the start of spring training. Wells originally was to have the operation after the season, but the surgery was moved up to accommodate Andrews’ schedule, the Blue Jays said Thursday.

Astronomia, returning on short rest, rallied to win the $77,000 Valor Lady Stakes for fillies and mares at Belmont Park on Thursday. Astronomia, who finished eighth Saturday in the Noble Damsel Handicap, shook off the quick turnaround to beat Stormy Kiss by a head with Somethinaboutbetty third. Astronomia ran six furlongs on the firm turf course in 1:08.18.
