Chicago Cubs' Mark DeRosa, bottom, Felix Pie, top right, Aramis Ramirez, center, and Henry Blanco sit in the dugout as their team bats against the Pittsburgh Pirates in the ninth inning of the baseball game in Pittsburgh, Sunday, Sept. 9, 2007. The Cubs fell out of first place in the NL Central, losing 10-5 to the Pirates.

Perhaps the Chicago Cubs should stop worrying about the Brewers and Cardinals, the teams they’re competing with in the NL Central, and become more concerned with the clubs well below them in the standings. Freddy Sanchez’s bases-loaded triple highlighted Pittsburgh’s six-run second inning and rookie Nyjer Morgan made an exceptional catch and drove in two runs, allowing the Pirates to knock the…

There’s just no stopping A-Rod. Philadelphia Eagles star Donovan McNabb says black quarterbacks face greater scrutiny than their white counterparts. In an interview on HBO’s “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel” to be broadcast Tuesday, McNabb said black quarterbacks “have to do a little bit extra” because there are relatively few of them, adding “people didn’t want us to play this position.” McNabb said if he passes for 300 yards…

It’s been a nice year so far for the Cassel family of Northridge, Calif. With his mother winning a creative arts Emmy and his younger brother’s NFL team starting 2-0, it was Jack Cassel’s turn to come up big on Monday night. The rookie right-hander pitched six solid innings for his first big league win, leading the San Diego Padres to a 3-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Washington Redskins head coach Joe Gibbs runs off the field with his team after they defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 20-12 in a football game Monday, Sept. 17, 2007, in Philadelphia.

The Washington Redskins believe they are ready to be kings of the NFC East. The best way to prove it is by knocking off the incumbent, which they did Monday night with a superb mixture of big plays on offense and defense. Led by maturing quarterback Jason Campbell and hard-hitting safeties Sean Taylor and rookie LaRon Landry, they beat the Philadelphia Eagles 20-12.

Turner concerned about Chargers offenseTurner concerned about Chargers offense

The San Diego Chargers hardly resemble the team that had the NFL’s best record last season, especially after getting routed 38-14 at New England on Sunday night. Under first-year coach Norv Turner, the Chargers (1-1) have looked nothing like the team many consider to be the league’s most-talented. The most glaring difference is that the normally high-powered offense is struggling.
