San Francisco Giants Barry Bonds, right, sticks his tongue out after a strike as San Diego Padres catcher Josh Bard, left, looks on in the sixth inning of a baseball game Friday, Sept. 14, 2007 in San Diego. The Padres won 5-4.

One out away from having their wild-card lead trimmed to one-half game, the San Diego Padres bounced back for a big victory. Khalil Greene homered to left field with one out in the 10th inning to give the struggling Padres a desperately needed 5-4 win over the San Francisco Giants on Friday night. New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick holds his forehead during football practice, Friday, Sept. 14, 2007, in Foxborough, Mass. Belichick escaped suspension for using a video camera to spy on opposing coaches, with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell deciding instead on Thursday night to fine him $500,000 and dock the team $250,000 and a first-day draft pick next year.

When he stands on an NFL sideline for 16 Sundays and a few more each year, Bill Belichick is an undisputed master, with a single-minded and cerebral approach that helped him win three Super Bowls during what might still be a Hall of Fame career. It’s everywhere else that he’s had trouble. The New England coach tried again Friday to move on from the sideline spying scandal in which he was fined…

The Milwaukee Brewers thought they got a lucky break when Cincinnati’s top two starters — Aaron Harang and Bronson Arroyo — were not scheduled to pitch in their three-game series. A 30-year-old rookie foiled the fun. Tom Shearn gave up four hits over 6 2-3 innings, Brandon Phillips drove in three runs and Adam Dunn hit his 39th homer to lead the Reds to their fourth straight victory, 6-5 on…
