The filly phenom can be beaten after all. Lear’s Princess overtook Belmont Stakes winner Rags to Riches in the stretch and pulled off an upset Saturday in the $250,000 Gazelle Stakes at Belmont Park. Rags to Riches, one of racing’s most popular stars after becoming the first filly in 102 years to win the Belmont, was sent off as the 2-5 favorite by the small crowd of 7,361.

The Green Monkey sure didn’t look like a $16 million horse in his greatly anticipated debut at Belmont Park on Saturday. The most expensive horse purchased at auction started slowly and never mounted a serious threat, finishing third in a six-furlong maiden special weight several races before Rags to Riches ran in the Gazelle Stakes.
