The shortest summer in Anaheim Ducks history ended Tuesday when the defending Stanley Cup champions opened training camp without captain Scott Niedermayer and unrestricted free agent Teemu Selanne. Ducks general manager Brian Burke had no other recourse but to suspend Niedermayer, who won the Conn Smythe Trophy as MVP of the playoffs and has been contemplating retirement.

A colt by Unbridled’s Song sold for $3.7 million Tuesday to top the second day of Keeneland’s September Yearling Sale. Demi O’Byrne, representing John Magnier and Coolmore Stud, made the winning bid and purchased another Unbridled’s Song Colt for $2.6 million. O’Byrne also paid $2 million for a colt by A.P.

Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense worked out for the first time since winning the Travers Stakes last month. Street Sense went five furlongs in 1:02.80 on Tuesday under exercise rider Tracey Wilkes at Churchill Downs, a run trainer Carl Nafzger said was “just to get him started back. “All we wanted him to do was stretch his legs.
