Rex Grossman sounded almost defiant. After an offseason in which he heard calls for a change, the inconsistent Chicago Bears’ quarterback had a message for his critics: Bring it on. “It doesn’t hurt when people doubt me,” Grossman said on Wednesday. He could be excused for feeling as though he is stuck in a time warp as the Bears prepare to defend the NFC championship.

For an organization that prides itself on secrecy, the Oakland Raiders are having a fun time keeping their starting quarterback from the public. Coach Lane Kiffin said Wednesday he will keep the Detroit Lions guessing whether Josh McCown or Daunte Culpepper will start in the opener Sunday. “It’s simply a matter of always trying to gain a competitive advantage,” Kiffin said.

Arizona Diamondbacks closer Jose Valverde, left, celebrates the final out against the San Diego Padres as first baseman Augie Ojeda, right, walks off the field in the ninth inning of a baseball game Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2007, in Phoenix. Valverde earned his league-leading 42nd save as the Diamondbacks defeated the Padres 9-6.

The Arizona Diamondbacks took it as a challenge when Jake Peavy asked to face them on three days’ rest. The worst-hitting team in the NL raked San Diego’s ace for eight runs and defeated the Padres 9-6 on Wednesday night to take a one-game lead over San Diego in the NL West. The eight earned runs matched a career high for Peavy, who lasted only four innings, his shortest start since July 21, 2006.

San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Kevin Correia throws out Colorado Rockies' Kazuo Matsui, of Japan, on Matsui's bunt in the second inning of a baseball game in Denver on Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2007. The Giants won 5-3. Correia was the winning pitcher.

Ubaldo Jimenez learned a valuable lesson: don’t challenge Barry Bonds and expect to win. “I know he is Barry Bonds,” the young Colorado Rockies pitcher said. “I saw him as just another hitter.” Bonds hit his 762nd home run to back Kevin Correia’s strong outing, and the San Francisco Giants beat the Colorado Rockies 5-3 on Wednesday night to avoid a sweep.
