The Nashville Predators signed forward Josh Langfeld to a one-year deal Tuesday. Langfeld, 30, spent last season with Detroit where he played in 33 games with the Red Wings and 38 with its AHL affiliate, Grand Rapids. He scored 32 points for Grand Rapids. He has 32 points (9 goals, 23 assists) in 141 career NHL games and has played five seasons with Ottawa, San Jose, Boston and Detroit.
Pierre Turgeon is expected to end his 19-season NHL career by announcing his retirement Wednesday. The 38-year-old is to meet with the media at agent Bob Sauve’s office in Laval, north of Montreal. Turgeon, an unrestricted free agent, was expected to retire after groin and calf injuries limited him to only 17 games last season with the Colorado Avalanche.
Roger Clemens will have a cortisone shot Wednesday on his ailing right elbow and is confident he will be able to pitch for the New York Yankees again this season. Clemens’ start was cut short after four innings Monday in New York’s 7-1 loss to Seattle, and he had an MRI exam after the game that the Yankees said revealed inflammation of the right elbow.
Hoping to stabilize their struggling bullpen, the Milwaukee Brewers acquired left-hander Ray King from the Washington Nationals on Tuesday in exchange for a player to be named. King was 1-1 with a 4.54 ERA in 55 appearances for the Nationals this season. The 33-year-old played for the Brewers from 2000-2002, and is expected to join the team on Wednesday.
Drew Bennett did not practice Tuesday for the St. Louis Rams but the wide receiver said he expects to play in Sunday’s season opener against the visiting Carolina Panthers. Bennett, a free agent signee, has a strained quad muscle. “I’m doing fine and I expect to play,” Bennett said. “I did a pretty good workout in the training room today.
Donovan McNabb is healthy and ready to go, having answered questions about his surgically repaired knee early in training camp. Los Angeles Lakers owner Jerry Buss pleaded guilty to drunken driving and was sentenced to five years’ probation Tuesday. The 74-year-old Buss was ordered to take part in a first-conviction program and attend a program administered by Mothers Against Drunk Driving. He also was fined $1,900. Buss owns a home in San Diego County and was arrested in Carlsbad in May.
