Caleb Swanigan and No. 20 Purdue beat No. 13 Wisconsin at its own game Sunday. The Boilermakers played better defense, were more efficient on offense and even bested the Badgers above the rim. Swanigan scored 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, but it was Purdue’s disciplined defenders that finally created an obstacle the Badgers couldn’t overcome in a 66-55 victory.

Out of the Top 25 when the season started, new point guard Manu Lecomte and the Baylor Bears are on the verge of the first No. 1 ranking in school history. Lecomte scored 17 points, Johnathan Motley had 13 and second-ranked Baylor came through for a raucous crowd hoping to celebrate a rise to the top of the poll, beating Oklahoma State 61-57 on Saturday night. It was significant even for first-year Cowboys coach Brad Underwood, who has some roots in the Big 12 and remembers where the scandal-plagued Baylor program was when coach Scott Drew took over 13 years ago.

No. 7 West Virginia got lazy on defense and kept letting TCU come back. The up-and-down effort changed for the Mountaineers when the Horned Frogs threatened to take the lead midway through the second half. Jevon Carter scored nine of his 13 points during a decisive 16-4 run that sent West Virginia to an 82-70 victory on Saturday.

Freshman Kamar Baldwin ensured No. 18 Butler offered a productive encore to its upset of No. 1 Villanova. Baldwin scored a career-high 16 points and helped hold Big East scoring co-leader Rodney Pryor scoreless to help the Bulldogs earn an 85-76 overtime victory over Georgetown on Saturday. Butler (14-2, 3-1 Big East), which upended the defending national champions 66-58 on Wednesday, never trailed in the overtime to earn its third consecutive victory.

North Carolina swingman Theo Pinson is finally set to make his season debut after October foot surgery. Coach Roy Williams said Friday he expects to play the junior in the 14th-ranked Tar Heels’ game with rival North Carolina State on Saturday night. Pinson’s return would be a major addition for the Tar Heels (13-3, 1-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) since he is possibly the team’s top perimeter defender and a good passer, while his versatility was a significant factor in UNC’s run to last year’s ACC championship and the NCAA title game.
