Nigel Williams-Goss spent Sunday and Monday in bed and only regained his strength from an awful stomach bug a couple of days ago. Williams-Goss scored 36 points as No. 5 Gonzaga used its accurate shooting all over the court to beat San Francisco 95-80 on Thursday. Williams-Goss shot 12 for 15 as Gonzaga shot 61 percent, made all nine of his free throws and also had 11 rebounds and six assists for the perennial West Coast Conference favorites in their eighth straight win against USF and fifth in a row on the Dons’ home court.

Just when UCLA had built a double-digit lead on California, the fourth-ranked Bruins switched into cruise control. Coach Steve Alford figured his players were tired of hearing his voice and he turned to Lonzo Ball. The freshman who has taken college basketball by storm is quiet by nature, but Ball did some chirping to his teammates.

Butler coach Chris Holtmann had the perfect plan to take down No. 1 Villanova on Wednesday night. Kethan Savage scored five of his 13 points during a decisive late run that helped the 18th-ranked Bulldogs end the nation’s longest winning streak at 20 games – and perhaps the Wildcats’ five-week run atop the polls – with a 66-58 victory that sent students streaming onto the court. What the Bulldogs (13-2, 2-1 Big East) also did was add another chapter to a storied program that captured the hearts of college basketball fans with back-to-back runs to the national championship game in 2010 and 2011 and broke hearts when two recent former players and the son of an assistant coach all died in 2016.

Duke ended Grayson Allen’s indefinite suspension just in time to give coach Mike Krzyzewski a proper sendoff. Allen had 15 points and seven assists in his return from a one-game ban for tripping an opponent, and No. 8 Duke routed Georgia Tech 110-57 on Wednesday night in Krzyzewski’s final game before leaving the team to have back surgery. It’s been a week full of surprises at Duke, where the announcement of Coach K’s imminent, if temporary, departure was rivaled by the abrupt end of Allen’s suspension – a move Krzyzewski said was ”appropriate” after discussions with athletic director Kevin White.
