Giants will not bring back Bonds in 2008

San Francisco Giants' general manager Brain Sabean speaks at a news conference before the Giants played the Cincinnati Reds in a baseball game in San Francisco, Friday, Sept. 21, 2007. The San Francisco Giants have told Barry Bonds that he won't play for them in 2008.

Barry Bonds is finished in San Francisco. The Giants told Bonds they will not bring him back next season, ending a 15-year run in which he set the single-season and all-time home run records and became a lightning rod for the steroids debate in baseball. “It’s always difficult to say goodbye,” Giants owner Peter Magowan said Friday.

Chicago Cubs' Jacque Jones strikes out with the bases loaded to end the seventh inning against the Florida Marlins during a baseball game at Dolphin Stadium in Miami Thursday, Sept. 27. 2007. The Marlins won 6-4 for a three-game sweep.

Swept by lowly Florida, the Chicago Cubs shambled out of town Thursday with this consolation: If they make the playoffs, they won’t have to face the Marlins again. The problem is Chicago may not make the playoffs. Struggling to avert another Cubs collapse, the NL Central leaders stranded 10 runners and lost to the last-place Marlins for the third game in a row, 6-4.
